A glowing tree with spreading branches grows out of a tree stump against a luminous green and yellow background.
A young girl with flowers in her hair stands among twisting branches in a soft green forest, reaching out in peace.
A close-up of a snake biting a person’s heel, set against dramatic green and yellow brushstrokes, illustrating Genesis 3.

A Shoot from Jesse’s Root Triptych

Created during his junior year at Roberts Wesleyan University, this acrylic-on-canvas triptych by Michael Sanders explores messianic prophecy through vibrant imagery and rich symbolism. Each panel draws directly from Scripture, focusing on the promise of Jesus foretold in the Book of Genesis and the Book of Isaiah.

“There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots.”
— Isaiah 11:1, NKJV

“And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel.”
— Genesis 3:15, NKJV

From the vulnerable innocence of the child in A Child Will Lead Them, to the rooted resilience of the tree in A Shoot, and the dramatic confrontation in You Will Strike His Heel, each piece captures a different facet of the promise of redemption. These works are not only visual meditations on Scripture, but also reflections of personal faith and creative growth.

“Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in Him.”

— John 3:14-1, NIV
